About
Mary’s Day is one of the most cherished traditions in the history of our school community. Originally begun at Villa Maria Academy, the celebration continues today at Cathedral Prep as a day dedicated to honoring Mary, the Blessed Mother and patroness of our school, and recognizing her spirit of courage, inspiration, and service.
Each year the school community gathers for a beautiful celebration centered on the Magnificat, Mary’s humble “yes” to trusting God’s will even in difficult moments. The day includes beloved traditions that many alumni remember well, including the selection of the May Court, the crowning of the May Queen, special music and prayer inside Saint Peter Cathedral, and the exchange of heartfelt Mary’s Day letters among students.
In recent years, the tradition has taken on even deeper meaning with the Blessed Mother statue from the Villa Maria campus now watching over the Cathedral Prep community, placed above the West 9th Street courtyard entrance as a symbol of the unity of our two schools and the continued presence of Mary guiding our community.
This year, alumni are invited to gather for a watch party of Mary’s Day and a Luncheon in the Project Commons and the Villa Maria Project Balcony, offering a chance to reconnect with fellow graduates and celebrate a tradition that reflects the faith, community, and spirit of the Prep and Villa family.
The Mary’s Day ceremony begins at 10:30am and ends at approximately 11:30am. Immediately at the conclusion of the ceremony the 2026 May Queen will join us for a visit to say a quick word of hello! Lunch will be served after this time followed by a quick word from a faculty member here at Prep.
