In honor of Mark Howland

As I adjusted to Tabor as a new freshman, Mr. Howland and I frequently had advisee check-ins at the waterfront, finding peace and beauty there. I remember one of these times particularly well, as we discussed how the waters of Sippican Harbor connect to the larger waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and how those waters connect us to the larger world. At the time, I found reassurance and comfort that I wasn’t as far from my home in Maine as I sometimes felt, as the safe harbor of Tabor was intricately connected to the waters of Casco Bay that lay directly in front of my childhood home. Since then, however, I find myself reminiscing about this conversation and considering how our immediate community connects to the larger world, and how we can be the key to building important bridges between people and communities, simply by seeking those connections. Sometimes, these quiet moments of reflection and understanding are the ones that provide guidance for life lessons. I am grateful that I can center myself at the Tabor waterfront and find connections that will last a lifetime.

I will never forget my admissions interview with Mrs Righter. It was my first time going to a different school than my older sister, Sarah, so she didn't know me or interact with me as Sarah's little sister. The other boarding schools I had interview at all felt so stuffy and intense but being at Tabor with Mrs Righter felt so safe and she created so much space for me to figure out who I might even be without being in the shadow of my sister. An exciting new chapter started that day in Mrs Righter's office of independence and self discovery.

One Tabor Moment that still comes to mind when I walk into the Braitmeyer Art Center or see Mrs. Smith, took place Senior Year. In class we were assigned to use any medium and create a self portrait. Before the final piece is to be handed in there is a critiquing process and during this everyone agreed that some of the proportions I used were too big. So I stayed after class and Mrs. Smith helped me figure out how to resize, edit and shade the charcoal instead of starting all over. It took a few more house to adjust and get just right. She loved my final piece so much she entered it into the Bowspirit! A fabulous surprise to receive on graduation day. I then framed and gifted the piece to my grandmother who still has it hanging in her house. Thank you Mrs. Smith for your patience and generosity of time. I think of this moment every time I see my face (ha!) hanging on the wall. (*Photo does not match moment)
