The John Formoso, ’89 Memorial Scholarship

The John Formoso, ’89 Memorial Scholarship honors a man of exceptional integrity, humility, and strength of character. A star athlete and dedicated servant-leader, John’s life was defined by a resolute devotion to his country and his team. He first dominated the football field as #79 for the Marauders, where he formed lifelong bonds with his “Prep brothers,” before continuing his athletic and academic journey at the United States Naval Academy. As noseguard #97 for the Midshipmen, John excelled alongside his revered fellow comrades, eventually earning his commission to fulfill his dream of serving as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.

Central to John’s world was his boundless love for his family. For over 26 years, he and his wife, Michelle, built a life grounded in deep friendship and mutual respect. He was a devoted father to his three children—Olivia, Isabella (Bella), and Luke—who today embody their father’s intellect, athleticism, and kindness. Whether with his family, on the gridiron, or in the line of duty, John embodied an indomitable spirit—often remarking that “pain was weakness leaving the body”—and remained a steadfast “warrior to the end”. This scholarship seeks to support students who mirror John’s resilience, his passion for lifelong learning, and his unwavering commitment to faith, family, and the service of others.

The scholarship is designed to provide $7,900 annually to a deserving young man in honor of John’s legacy. This amount reflects the number 79, which John proudly wore during his time at Saint Peter’s Prep. The endowment goal of $197,500 ensures this award can be sustained each year, with a 4 percent annual distribution funding the scholarship.
