How Do I claim the credit
After you donate to the Saint John Scholarship Granting Organization, the Saint John SGO will provide you with an acknowledgement (receipt) of your donation. You or your tax-preparer should attach the acknowledgement to your Ohio 1040 IT tax form and keep it in you records to substantiate any federal tax deduction claimed.
What is an SGO
In 2021, the state of Ohio passed legislation that allows for the establishment of SGOs. SGO stands for Scholarship Granting Organization. Scholarship Granting Organizations provide an opportunity for donors to use their tax dollars to provide tuition assistance to eligible families and their students.
Scholarship Granting Organizations are separate, tax exempt, 501(c)3 organizations. SGOs are established to collect donations on behalf of participating schools who want to provide scholarships to their eligible students. Each SGO and their participating schools determine the scholarship application and subsequent award process according to Ohio laws and guidelines.
A Scholarship Granting Organization must register and be certified by the state of Ohio.
Can I give less than $750 and still claim the CREDIT for the amount given?
YES. Any amount up to $750/1500 is creditable (for the amount donated)
Can I donate up until the time when my tax preparer files my tax forms?
You must give by the traditional “tax-day.” If you or your tax preparer plan on filing an extension request, make sure you donate by April 15th if you wish to take advantage of the Ohio SGO income tax credit.
Can all student parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, Saint John teachers, coaches, alumni, benefactors, and other interested community members claim the credit?
YES. If they live in Ohio, yes! Every year, each Ohio income taxpayer can claim their credit. And, even if some individuals among your network live out of state, they probably have friends in Ohio they might like to tell.
