Fr. Edwin followed some of us to St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City where he started the wrestling program at Prep and continued to nourish our abbreviated journey of 1 year (1971) with St. Benedict's while introducing his extraordinary humanity to the young men who passed through Prep from that time forward - well done Brother Edwin!

On a rare occasion, school was canceled due to snow. I went sleigh riding with Fr. Ed on a golf course. We rode double on a sled and crashed. My face was cut up from the event. While walking back to the clubhouse, many other sleigh riders Were staring at my face, and Fr. Ed‘s comment was, “you should see the other guy“
All the next day, school was open again. Fr. Ed took the moment and advantage to call me out in front of convocation to warn others, what can happen when school closes and there’s a snow day!

My friend Jim Gaul often spoke of Fr. Ed’s gravitas. How the boys sat in solemn attention whenever he spoke especially when he intoned, “God’s gonna want to know where you stand when the calling for righteousness abounds.” Jim was my good friend and mentor and exuded a good deal of his own gravitas in his classrooms. I hasten to add he was a very funny guy beloved by his students.

I first met Fr. Ed when I introduced a student facing serious challenges… challenges that the school was not in a position to easily address. Rather than turning us away, Fr. Ed welcomed the boy while honestly explaining what he’d need to succeed. I was amazed at Fr. Ed’s compassion (mixed with tough love) and his readiness to help with such a tough case. I doubt I will ever be able to repay Fr. Ed or St. Benedict’s for the willingness to lift up this child.
