In honor of (Sorry! Too many): Jack Sindall, Barbara Sindall, Norm Jason, Dick Mitchell, Mark Seltzer, Bob Hyde

For Jack Sindall who hired me right out of college and encouraged me in the most humane and supportive way possible and once walked me down the hallway as a first year teacher with his arm around my shoulder (what head of school does that?) and told me he'd heard from parents and students I was doing a great job which I barely believed but wanted to believe. For Barbara Sindall, Magister linguae Latinae et amicus bonus (great teacher of Latin and a good friend) who once in the faculty room used the sewing kit she kept in her purse to sew up my ratty sport jacket with its loose threads and always laughed at my silly jokes. For Norm Jason who was endlessly enthusiastic and happy and always supportive -- and who was one hell of a good shortstop. For Dick Mitchell, my great good friend with a wonderful sense of humor and an easygoing positive approach to teaching who students loved and who I respected and tried to be more like. For Mark Seltzer, roommate, friend, sometime math teacher and sailor, who had a boundless sense of humor and who saw all things positively and optimistically. For Bob Hyde, janitor and custodian par excellence, who encouraged me with his great sense of humor, kept the school spotless, helped me build the hurdles for Field Day, and was a different kind of mentor.

In honor of Alan Houghton

He was headmaster when I was a student. As a Latin scholar, he also imparted a love of the language and its role as root of Western languages to his students.
