In memory of Ave Maria DeVanon Bortz '61

Ave was one of the most extraordinary teachers of my high school years and she served as Acting Head of School during my Senior year. It was also a true blessing to have Ave as a lifelong mentor and friend as our tenures on staff overlapped by 25 years. Her brilliance sparkled and she truly lived her life dedicated to living our motto, "Actions Not Words."

In honor of Terry Mitchell

I’ll never forget the time Terry and I were on the same Interim trip photographing the missions. We were at San Juan Capistrano, minding our own business, when out of nowhere a seagull decided Terry’s head was the perfect landing pad. The look on her face was pure comedy gold — part shock, part royal indignation. I laughed so hard I almost dropped my camera. Trust Terry to turn a quiet, historical moment into a slapstick scene straight out of a movie!

In honor of Theresa Mitchell '77

Terry was one of my closer friends at Mayfield. She wrote in my senior yearbook, "Remember our double date and all those wild parties-...40 years from now we'll have a retreat--right!" Terry knew how to have a good time and keep people laughing. I can still hear her infectious laugh. Her senior quote was from the Eagles, "You know I've always been a dreamer...And I'll take it to the limit, one more time!" I hope Terry you are going to be my/our guardian angel.
