Why is Newhalen School fundraising for their lunch program?

Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Members, Tribal Entities, and City Councils,
I am sharing important news about the Lake and Peninsula School District. Our mission is to nourish student growth by investing in partnerships and implementing culturally responsive, place-based education. Our vision is to nurture self-directed, lifelong learners who are grounded in their culture and contribute to their communities. To achieve this, we focus on student readiness, support our staff, provide culturally relevant, project- and place-based learning, and build and sustain partnerships.
On September 16, 2024, the LPSD School Board extended the LPSD-supported USDA Food Service Program through December 20, 2024. This extension allows us to continue providing food service to all schools. At the same time, we work with local entities to take over food service for students in our communities from January through the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year.
Since 2016, the Lake and Peninsula School District (LPSD) has faced financial challenges. We have not received increased sustainable funding from the Alaska Department of Education’s Base Student Allocation. With rising costs due to inflation, our school board has had to make tough decisions to balance our budget, including reducing programs and adjusting operations.
One of our biggest challenges is funding our food service program. In the 2023-2024 school year, the district-supported cost was estimated at $430,000, with a USDA grant covering only 44.8%. LPSD had to cover the remaining 55.2%. By working together and through partnership entities, we can find a solution that supports our students’ growth and aligns with our mission and vision.
