Mrs. Whitecamp encouraged me in my pursuit of science and biology.

Two programs at Chaminade profoundly impacted my life. The first was the Chaminade Drama Department. Back in the 80s, we had terrific instructors - Carole Kirby, Dorothy McDonnel, Juliet Rohde, and John Fennell - who guided us in class and in productions. While at Chaminade, my greatest joy was performing in plays and musicals. The second influence was the writing instruction I received at Chaminade. Specifically from Peter Juzwiak, our college writing instructor. Mr. Juzwiak was the first teacher that noticed that my writing was funny. He read one of my essays out loud in class, and it was the first time people laughed in response to something I'd written. It was really remarkable and I remember that moment to this day. I continued studying acting in college and graduate school, but discovered playwriting along the way and ended up as a professional writer. After 28 years of writing children's animation, I've circled back to theatre, combining my love of acting, singing, and writing as I perform a silly song I wrote that would amuse Mr. Juzwiak (and probably offend Mrs. McDonnel).

What a privilege it is to have sat at a lunch table in the Bob Hope Center on my first day of high school and found my forever friends. 22 years and counting!

There were many things that shaped me while I attended Chaminade. Being a part of the Volleyball team was a fun experience and taught me how to work as a team. Mr Dolan academically pushed me. I took Pre-calculus with Mr Dolan. He ned I struggled but he had patience and worked with me so I understood and passed the class.

I would like to dedicate this humble donation to the memory of my mother, Juliet E. Rohde, who taught drama at Chaminade for many years and directed so many of our plays. Some of my fondest memories are of those years in the theater and of the wonderful people who helped make it such a special place. Carol Kirby, Jerry Redondo, and Fran Wilson also gave so much to those of us who were lucky enough to be “drama kids.” Looking back, I realize how many teachers left their mark on my life. Chris Redondo, Charles Zeltzer, Brother Frank Spaeth, and others each contributed something I carried with me long after I left Chaminade. Brother Gustie even cast me in the plays when I was in eighth grade, before I had officially entered Chaminade, so in some ways I felt part of the community before I was even a student. I was also one of the first girls to attend Chaminade, and my graduating class was quite small. There was an intimacy to those years that is hard to describe now. Chaminade truly felt like a family. The friendships were part of that, too, and I feel especially fortunate that dear friends such as Laura Porter Simko are still very much a part of my life today. So many years later, I look back with deep affection and gratitude for the people, friendships, theater productions, classrooms, and countless small moments that helped shape who I became. This donation is given in remembrance of my mother and with gratitude for a place that holds a very special chapter of my life. I am also donating a painting by my late husband, James Paul Brown, to assist with fundraising.

Librarians Mrs. Benning and Ms. Ryser made reading and writing so much fun for me and my friends! They supported our creativity by hosting the yearly National Novel Writing Month contest. I remember my friends and I gathered in the sofas marked off with "Writers Only" tape hunched over our laptops sharing our wacky story ideas while Mrs. Benning and Ms. Ryser cheered us on. If I ever get my worked published, they'll be in the dedication page for sure.

Chaminade started shaping Kelly and me as early as January 1972, when Kelly Fennell was among the trailblazing few who were the first girls admitted to Chaminade. We started dating senior year and have been married 43 glorious years. Thank you, Chaminade!

I cannot stress enough what an impact Chaminade had on my academic education. I have many fond memories of the school and the many friends I made along the way. I eventually ended up studying in Italy for six years and was enormously prepared for the difficult challenges that that opportunity presented. I wanted to mention a few of the wonderful teachers that had a great impact on my academic preparation. Mr. Reeves (chemistry), Brother McCall (english literature and the High Sierra Club), Mr. Rouser (history), Mr. Melcher (english literature), Mr. Mussack (Math and the High Sierra Club), Father Sutton (latin), and Mr. Redondo (religious studies). I was so glad to be a part of such a great school. And, of course, I am so grateful to my parents who made it all possible to attend.

Chaminade was really the foundation for a successful career and I made lifelong friends there whom I am blessed to still see often. Many fond memories of fun athletic competition, great teachers and wonderful extra curricular clubs and activities.
