Bird Watercolor Painting with Ronna Fujisawa (The Northern Flicker)
Hoffman Gallery, Catlin Gabel East Campus
Welcome to this wonderful opportunity to paint with Ronna Fujisawa, a long-time landscape and bird watercolor painter. She has an MFA from OCAC in Applied Craft and Design, 2019. She teaches painting and mixed media classes at The Bird Alliance of Oregon, The Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, Catlin Gabel Community Arts Program for adults, and art classes at Catlin Gabel’s Lower School.
Ronna has her own teaching practice called Salty Water Art, where she offers Zoom and in-person watercolor classes on a weekly basis. Visit her website for more information on her work and class schedule.
The Northern Flicker is a woodpecker. Although it can climb up the trunks of trees and hammer on wood like other woodpeckers, the Northern Flicker prefers to find food on the ground. Flickers appear brownish overall with a white rump patch that’s conspicuous in flight and often visible when perched. The undersides of the wing and tail feathers are bright yellow, for eastern birds, or red, in western birds. With a closer look you’ll see the brown plumage is richly patterned with black spots, bars, and crescents.
In this class, students will paint a fun close up of a Northern Flicker, learning how to mix neutral colors, as well as techniques of layering colors to create various feather patterns. Your instructor, Ronna Fujisawa of Salty Water Art, will be your guide through the step-by-step process of painting.
All supplies will be included, as well as a photo of the bird we will refer to. These are the colors of watercolor paint we will use on this bird. Paint colors: Ronna used primarily Daniel Smith tube watercolors
