CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is a core IB requirement and graduation component at Brooklyn Friends School. Focused on student-led group projects with outside partners, CAS emphasizes community service rooted in compassion, collaboration, and ethical reflection. Though creativity and activity are included, service is central. Three groups will share how CAS shapes their BFS journey:
1) The Urban Roots Initiative seeks to establish a network of green spaces and community fridges throughout NYC’s low income neighborhoods to diversify produce distribution and promote food equity.
2) Conversacion Universal establishes a long-term partnership between Brooklyn Friends School and Unidad Educativa Nueva Semilla to support interest-based, conversational language exchange in English and Spanish. The goal is to make language learning more engaging and relevant by centering lessons around what students are genuinely interested in discussing.
3) The Memory book project seeks to weave together storytelling and art in partnership with a local hospice. Students will gather memories, reflections, and advice from patients to create beautifully crafted memory books, while also guiding them in painting, poetry, or drawing to express their inner worlds—culminating in an exhibition for their families.
