About Rev. John J. Yanas ‘72
Father John J. Yanas Jr. ’72 has dedicated over 40 years to priestly ministry in the Diocese of Albany. Ordained in 1984 after studying at St. Michael’s College and Immaculate Conception Seminary, he has served in a variety of roles—pastor, chaplain, administrator, and mentor—across the region, including his current position as pastor of Sacred Heart in Troy. His ministry also includes time as chaplain at St. Peter’s Hospital, where he offered comfort, sacraments, and prayer to the sick and dying, often in moments of great urgency.
Father Yanas describes his priesthood as a journey of “peace and tranquility,” guided by divine providence and lived with humility. His compassion is ever-present, whether he’s answering a late-night phone call or welcoming someone at the rectory door. Despite a cancer diagnosis while in seminary, and a later bone marrow transplant in 2012, he continues to carry the full demands of parish life with grace and strength.
Memorable moments from his ministry include celebrating Mass at the Marian Shrine in Lourdes and officiating a wedding at the Soldiers’ Chapel in West Point—experiences that reflect both his global perspective and reverence for service. He often refers to himself as “an underachieving average guy” simply following the whisper of the Holy Spirit, but his life speaks to something much greater. He embodies a deeply Lasallian understanding of vocation: to live for others, led by faith and love.
A proud member of a CBA legacy family, Father Yanas’s grandfather, Joseph J. Casey ’22, was class valedictorian; his father, John J. Yanas Sr., served as board chair and received the LaSallian Trustee Award; and his brother Joe graduated in 1975. He remains closely connected to his Class of ’72 Brothers, cherishing the lifelong friendships formed on De La Salle Road. Father Yanas is a model of compassion, character, and Catholic leadership—a humble servant, devoted priest, and proud Brother. As one classmate put it, “Father Yanas is the embodiment of a Brothers Boy. He is humble, always ready to serve, and deeply connected to his CBA roots.”
